Nabal

(fl. 11th-10th cent BCE)
Israelite landowner, husband of Abigail. He was wealthy man, the owner of thousands of sheep and goats in Carmel. When ten followers of David visited him he received them inhospitably. David gathered a band of 400 together to take revenge on Nabal, but was appeased by Abigail. However, Nabal did not escape. He was killed by God a few days later, and David married Abigail (I Samuel 25).
